Bar Fridge Not Cooling: Causes and Parts to Check

Quick answer: If a bar fridge is running but not cooling, check airflow and the condenser first, then the door seal, the condenser fan, the controller and probe. A failed condenser fan is a common cause, and you can test it by turning the blade by hand with the power off. Gas leaks and compressor faults need a licensed refrigeration technician.

Bar fridge not cooling: check these 6 things in order

# Check What to look for
1 Airflow and placement Fridge jammed into a cabinet or against a wall
2 Condenser coil Dust or grease blocking the coil
3 Door and seal Door not closing, torn or loose seal
4 Condenser fan Not turning, slow, stiff or noisy
5 Controller and probe Wrong set point, wrong or flashing display, probe out of place
6 Refrigerant and compressor Licensed technician only

1. Airflow and placement

A bar fridge has to shed heat. If it is pushed tight into a cabinet or against a wall, the heat has nowhere to go and the fridge runs hot. Leave clear space around the back and sides. Check your manual for the minimum gaps. In a hot bar or an outdoor area, the fridge works even harder.

2. Condenser coil

Dust and grease on the condenser coil stop it shedding heat, so the fridge runs for long periods and stays warm. Switch off, clean the coil with a soft brush and a vacuum, and keep the area clear.

3. Door and seal

A door that does not close properly lets warm air in all day. Check the door shuts fully, the seal is not torn and the hinges are tight. A glass door that is slightly ajar is easy to miss.

4. Condenser fan

The condenser fan pulls air across the coil whenever the compressor runs. With the power off, turn the blade by hand. If it is stiff, noisy or does not turn, the motor is failing. A hot compressor area is another sign. Read our guide on a condenser fan motor not working.

5. Controller and probe

A digital controller reads the probe and switches the compressor to hold the set point. Check the set point, then check that the probe sits where it reads cabinet air, not next to the evaporator or a door seal. If the display is wrong or flashing, see our guides for Elitech, Dixell and Carel controllers. If the controller has failed, replacing the sealed unit is usually faster than repairing it.

6. Refrigerant and compressor

If the coil is clean, the seal is good, the fan runs and the controller works, the fault may be low refrigerant or a compressor problem. That needs a licensed refrigeration technician. We supply electrical and fan parts only and do not offer repairs.

Safety

Switch off and unplug the fridge before you touch any wiring. Fan motors and controllers are mains-powered, so fitting should be done by a licensed refrigeration mechanic or electrician.

Bar fridge not cooling FAQs

Why is my bar fridge running but not getting cold?

Common causes are a blocked condenser, poor airflow around the fridge, a failed condenser fan, a worn door seal, a misplaced probe or wrong controller settings, and a refrigerant or compressor fault. Check the simple causes first.

How much space does a bar fridge need around it?

Leave clear space around the back and sides so the condenser can shed heat. A fridge pushed tight into a cabinet or against a wall runs hot and cools poorly. Check your manual for the minimum gaps.

How do I know if the condenser fan has failed?

With the power off, turn the blade by hand. A stiff blade, grinding noise or a fan that does not turn while the compressor runs means the motor is failing. A hot compressor area is another sign.

Which condenser fan motor suits my bar fridge?

Match the old motor's power, voltage, speed and mounting. We stock 5W and 10W, 240V motors at 1300/1550 RPM, and a 120mm axial fan. Read the label on your old motor, or send us your model number.

My bar fridge display is wrong or flashing. Is it the controller?

It can be the controller or its probe. Check the probe position and wiring first. If the controller has failed, a replacement such as the Elitech EK-3030 needs a 71mm x 29mm cut-out, so measure your opening before you order.

Can I fix a gas leak or compressor fault myself?

No. Refrigerant and compressor work needs a licensed refrigeration technician. We supply electrical and fan parts only and do not offer repairs.
