Fridge defrost heater elements for frost-free fridges

A fridge defrost heater melts the frost that builds up on the evaporator coil of a frost-free fridge or freezer. When the heater fails, ice blocks the airflow, the fridge section warms up and food spoils. Fast Fridge Spares stocks replacement defrost heaters for Westinghouse, Kelvinator and Fisher & Paykel fridges, dispatched from our NSW warehouse and delivered Australia-wide.

Defrost heater elements we stock

  • RF116 – 350W, 440 mm dual-pass defrost heater element for Westinghouse and Kelvinator fridges.
  • RF153 – 450W, 520 mm defrost heater element for Westinghouse and Kelvinator fridges.
  • RS643V / SE114 – 450W defrost heater element for Westinghouse side-by-side fridges.
  • Fisher & Paykel 322W, 46 cm – generic defrost heater element, 240V.

Signs you need a fridge defrost heater replacement

  1. Thick frost or ice on the back wall of the freezer, over the evaporator cover.
  2. The freezer is cold but the fridge section is warm.
  3. The fans run but little cold air comes through the vents.
  4. The fridge works for a few days after a manual defrost, then warms up again.

Ice build-up can also be caused by a faulty defrost thermostat or defrost timer, so it pays to test all three parts of the defrost system.

How to test a defrost heater element

With the fridge unplugged, a technician measures the heater's resistance with a multimeter. An open circuit (no reading) means the element has failed. As a guide, the expected resistance at 240V is voltage squared divided by wattage:

  • 322W element: about 179 Ω
  • 350W element: about 165 Ω
  • 355W element: about 162 Ω
  • 450W element: about 128 Ω

How to choose the right defrost heater element

Match the wattage, length and connector of your old element, and check the part number (for example RF116 or RF153) or your fridge model number. Some elements are supplied without a plug and must be wired in. A fridge defrost heater replacement is a 240V job and should be done by a licensed refrigeration mechanic or electrician.

Fridge Defrost Heater FAQs

A fridge defrost heater warms the evaporator coil for a short time during each defrost cycle to melt frost. Without it, ice blocks the airflow and a frost-free fridge stops cooling properly.

Our fridge defrost heater price currently ranges from $28 to $29.50 (AUD) per element, depending on the model.

Common signs are heavy ice on the freezer back wall, a warm fridge section with a cold freezer, and weak airflow. A technician can confirm it by testing the element's resistance with a multimeter.

Match the wattage, length and connector of your old element, and check the part number (such as RF116 or RF153) or your fridge model number. If you're unsure, send us the model number and we'll check.

Yes. We stock the RF116 (350W, 440 mm), the RF153 (450W, 520 mm) and a 450W element for Westinghouse side-by-side models RS643V and SE114.

Yes. We stock generic 322W (46 cm) and 355W (57 cm) defrost heater elements for Fisher & Paykel fridges.

Defrost heaters are 240V parts inside the freezer, so replacement should be done by a licensed refrigeration mechanic or electrician.
