Fridge Temperature Sensors for Home and Commercial Refrigeration

A fridge temperature sensor tells your fridge's control board how cold the cabinet is, so it knows when to run the compressor, fans and defrost cycle. When a sensor fails, your fridge can run too warm, freeze food, run non-stop or show an error code. Fast Fridge Spares supplies fridge temperature sensors for household fridges, freezers, bar fridges, display fridges and coolrooms, delivered from our NSW warehouse Australia-wide.

Types of Fridge Temperature Sensors

Refrigerator temperature sensors (thermistors): the main sensor in the fresh food compartment that reports cabinet temperature to the control board.

Freezer temperature sensors: monitor the freezer compartment and help keep it at around −18 °C.

Fridge defrost sensors: sit on the evaporator coil and tell the board when frost has melted, so the defrost heater switches off.

NTC temperature probes: replacement probes for digital controllers such as Elitech, Dixell and Carel, used in coolrooms, display fridges and commercial refrigeration.

How a Fridge Thermistor Works

Most modern fridges use an NTC (negative temperature coefficient) thermistor. As the temperature drops, its resistance goes up. The control board reads that resistance and converts it into a temperature. Common sensor values are 2 kΩ, 5 kΩ and 10 kΩ at 25 °C, so always match the rating of your old sensor.

Signs You Need a Fridge Temperature Sensor Replacement

Symptom Likely sensor cause What to check
Fridge too warm or too cold Fridge sensor giving a wrong reading Test sensor resistance
Compressor runs non-stop or barely runs Sensor reading out of range Compare reading with the resistance chart
Error code on the display Sensor open or shorted Look up the code in your manual
Ice build-up on the freezer back wall Failed defrost sensor Test the defrost sensor and heater
Freezer not freezing, fan running Freezer or defrost sensor Test both sensors

How to Test Fridge Temperature Sensor Resistance

Turn off and unplug the fridge.

Disconnect the sensor and set a multimeter to resistance (Ω).

Measure across the two wires and note the temperature of the sensor.

Compare the reading with your fridge's resistance chart. A reading of zero (short) or infinite (open) means the sensor has failed.

For a quick check, place the sensor in iced water. Its resistance should rise steadily as it cools.

Fridge Temperature Sensor Price

Most fridge temperature sensors cost between about $15 and $55, while brand-specific sensor kits cost more. A replacement sensor is usually a low-cost fix compared with a new control board or a new fridge.

How to Choose the Right Replacement

Match the part number printed on the old sensor, or your fridge's model number.

Check the resistance rating (for example 10 kΩ at 25 °C).

Compare the cable length, probe size and connector type.

For digital controllers, check the probe type the controller accepts (NTC or PTC).

Not sure which sensor you need? Send us your fridge model number and a photo of the old sensor through our Find Your Part page. Fridge sensors connect to 240V control systems, so they should be fitted by a licensed refrigeration mechanic or electrician.

Fridge Temperature Sensor FAQs

It measures the temperature inside the fridge or freezer and sends it to the control board, which switches the compressor, fans and defrost cycle on and off.

Most fridge temperature sensors cost between about $15 and $55 in Australia. Brand-specific sensor kits can cost more. Check each product for the current price.

Common signs are a fridge that's too warm or too cold, a compressor that runs constantly, an error code on the display, or ice build-up on the back wall.

Unplug the fridge, disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance with a multimeter. Compare the reading with your fridge's resistance chart. A zero or infinite reading means it has failed.

It's usually behind a cover on the inside back wall or near the air vents. The defrost sensor is clipped to the evaporator coil behind the freezer back panel.

Sometimes. A universal sensor can work if the resistance rating, probe size and connector match your original. Brand-specific sensors are safer for fridges with electronic control boards.

Sensors connect to 240V control systems, so a fridge temperature sensor replacement should be done by a licensed refrigeration mechanic or electrician.

Yes. Orders placed by 6pm are dispatched the same business day from Colebee, NSW with Australia Post. Most arrive in 1–2 business days.
